Inflation pinch in U.S. middle of road with G20 countries

There's been a lot of talk about inflation the last couple of years. All of us feel it personally in some way, and it's one of the big issues of this year's Presidential campaign. We have also seen the inflation rate drop in recent months. Let's put it into some perspective with the other G-20 countries. The inflation rate for the United States in April was 3.4 percent. It's extremely high in Argentina and Turkey, and even higher in countries like Russia, Mexico and India. European countries range from less than a percent to 3.3 percent. Nobody likes paying more for things, but we had almost no inflation at all for years. The United States is doing a little better than some countries and doing a little worse than others. So how much is inflation being inflated as a campaign issue? Host Jim Niedelman brings back Dave Loebsack and Michelle Crawford to discuss. “I understand why people are concerned about this. It does hurt in the pocketbook, especially for the low-income folks,” Loebsack said. “On paper obviously the numbers look competitive to other nations, but all you have to do is talk to any American family of any socioeconomic background, both sides of the aisle, and they’re feeling it,” Crawford said. To hear what else our panelists have to say, click on the video. Question of the Week And now we'd like to hear what you have to say, too, with our question of the week: How important is inflation as a campaign issue to you? Tax increases for Illinois budget called into question

Iowa joins a lawsuit to try to block regulations from the Biden administration that plaintiffs claim hurt development. Illinois lawmakers send a budget to the governor later than scheduled with higher taxes and spending. Host Jim Niedelman gets into that with Iowa Republican Party Central Committee member Michelle Crawford and former Iowa Congressman Dave Loebsack. “I would like to see some sort of middle ground between what I’m apparently seeing in Illinois going on and what I’m seeing in Iowa,” Loebsack said. “We’re way more fiscally responsible [than Illinois] and Iowans are getting back more money back in their pocket thanks to leadership currently,” Crawford said. To hear more from the panelists, click on the video.

Miller-Meeks defends record against primary challenger claiming to be more conservative

We're two days away from the Iowa primary, and Republican Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks wants to keep her job. She faces a primary challenge from David Pautsch for the First Congressional District seat. We introduced you to him last week. Miller-Meeks has a lot more money than Pautsch for the primary. The latest filings with the Federal Election Commission show Miller-Meeks has almost $1.8 million in cash on hand. Pautsch has a little more than $6,000. This will be Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ first time since going to Congress that she will face a primary opponent. As we showed you, she enjoys a huge financial advantage over fellow Republican David Pautsch. Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks joins us for a conversation. “I think that all of us know that it just depends upon what the ground game is, how involved someone is, how in touch with their district,” Miller-Meeks said. “Are they doing the constituent work they need to do? Are they making the visits? Do people see them working in their behalf?” To hear more from Miller-Meeks, click on the video.

May ends with wild night of Davenport Speedway racing

The month of May ended with a wild night of racing action at Davenport Speedway. While some classes saw first-time winners for the season, others saw dominant cars and drivers win out. The Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Models had their fifth different winner in five races. Joel Callahan of Dubuque captured his first Davenport win of the season. Callahan started on the outside pole and led all 25 laps of the feature. Matt Ryan started eighth and drove his way to second place by lap 15. From that point, all he could do is whittle a little off Callahan’s sizeable lead. Travis Denning, Kasey Williams, and Chris Lawrence were all fighting for a top five finish. They took third through fifth in that order. Lawrence, Denning, and Callahan were late model heat winners. Spencer Diercks finally broke through for his first Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Modified feature win of 2024. Spencer started ninth, but quickly leap-frogged to the lead on lap six. Diercks had to fight off Scott Lemke for the lead early in the race and hold back a charging Ben Chapman in the final laps. Chapman started in the eighth row and finally got to second with two-thirds of the race was in the books. Chris Zogg had an equally impressive run to take third. Dustin Smith and Mitch Way rounded out the top five. Logan Veloz continued his dominance of the D&K Home Products IMCA SportMod division. Logan collected his fourth feature win of the season. To get his fourth win, Logan had to pass his Uncle Justin Veloz with just two laps to go. Justin would hold on to finish second while Shane Paris nursed a broken left front to a third-place finish. Cole Stichter and Mike Adams were fourth and fifth respectively. Nick Hixson scored his first Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock feature win of the year, in a race that would not end. It took three attempts at a green-white-checkered finish to get Hixson across the finish line. Landen Chrestensen had an up and down race before winding up second. Donnie Louck started fifth and finished third. Fourth went to Trevor Tucker and fifth to Tony Von Dresky. Daniel Wauters drove to his third straight Theisen’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature win on Friday. Wauters led the last 13 laps of the feature to secure the victory. Randy LaMar gave chase, but would have to settle for second. Jordan Miles took third over Keith Lilly and Evan Roberts. There is always brotherly love. Then, there is brotherly shove. And then there is Friday’s Fred’s Towing & Cantrell’s Towing 4-Cylinder feature race. Brothers Cyle and Travis Hawkins were battling for the lead in the final turn when they made contact that sent Travis up and off the racetrack, flipping violently. Cyle stopped his racecar to check on his brother and with both drivers out of their cars, that left Harrison Horn as the only racer on the track and the surprise first-time feature winner. Both Hawkins brothers escaped the incident without serious injury. Friday, June 7, is Family Fun Day at Davenport Speedway. There will be inflatables and activities for the kids. Students from Davenport, Bettendorf, show off the house they built

Students from Davenport and Bettendorf showed off a house they helped build. It's part of the Home-Building Trade Project. Fifteen students finished the home-building program this year. Students built the home from the ground up with the help of local Realtors and construction workers who say programs like this give the students an advantage among their peers. "Students are really proud," said Realtor Jon Yocum. "It raises the hair on the back of my neck to see how proud the students are to come in here and show off what they did." Students from Davenport and Bettendorf worked for an entire school year to complete this three-bed, three-bathroom home. Yocum, who has been a part of the program for 26 years, says the skills students learn are useful in everyday life. "I'm very proud of it," Yocum said. "We've had a lot of students go on who have careers in the construction industry. We run into people who say they were in the first class and they're now flipping homes." Students did everything, from laying flooring to framing walls, roofing and more. One student says he's thankful for the opportunity to get hands-on experience while in high school. "I wasn't going to go directly into construction," said Davenport North senior Jay Weltzin-Trainer. "I just wanted to learn some nice skills for when I get my own house so if something goes wrong, I actually have a little bit of an idea of what I want to do with it and how to fix it." Marty Eilers is co-chair for the Student Home-Building Trade Project. He says more programs like this are needed as demand for jobs grows: "I see the desperate need that we have for construction and plumbers, and electricians, tile layers, roofers, concrete - you name it, we are in desperate need of good-quality skilled laborers." Students say they spent three hours each school day working on the home, and to see the final result was all worth it.      "It's great," Eilers said. "It's absolutely fantastic seeing the kids just enjoy the fruits of their labor, saying 'Hey, mom and dad, believe it or not, I can help you change out your outlets, re-tile your bathroom.' You know, it's really cool to watch." The newly built home has already been purchased as one family is preparing to move in. It's the 25th home built through the program.

Niabi joins national zoos network

Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley is now a member in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Wildlife Confiscation Network. The network was set up to assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state, and local law enforcement agencies in providing care and homes for smuggled and confiscated wildlife brought illegally into the United States, according to a Friday release from Niabi director Lee Jackson. Yellow warbler in blossom Niabi Zoo was chosen as a member after undergoing an extensive review of its animal care programs, staff experience, and finances. To date, Niabi is only one of 24 such facilities nationwide to receive this designation, and the only zoo in Illinois to be a member. Some of the other participating organizations include the San Diego Zoo and the Los Angeles Zoo. “We are proud and honored to be chosen to participate in such an important undertaking,” zoo director Lee Jackson said in Friday’s release. “The illegal wildlife trade is extremely damaging to both wild populations and to public health. “Wildlife trafficking is a conservation crisis, with countless animals and plants being pushed toward extinction from the illegal harvest of and trade in live plants and animals, and products made from them,” he said. “Wildlife trafficking is one of the largest illegal trades, after crimes such as drug and human trafficking, and is estimated to be worth between $7 billion to $23 billion per year. Often the same criminals that engage in wildlife trafficking also engage in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and weapons smuggling.” Meerkat with forage device (Niabi Zoo) The Wildlife Confiscations Network is a first-of-its-kind pilot program that reduces wildlife trafficking and increases support for law enforcement by providing a coordinated system to ensure the care and welfare of confiscated live wildlife, Niabi said. The Network operates under the Wildlife Trafficking Alliance, a program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and will work toward building a national network. It brings together zoos, aquariums, non-governmental organizations, universities, botanical gardens, and certified facilities of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries as key partners in assuring high standards of care for the management of confiscated wildlife. “The fact that our zoo is able to participate with organizations many times our size says a great deal about our staff and programs of animal care,” Jackson said. “Our community can be very proud of the important contributions Niabi is making to global wildlife conservation.” Niabi Zoo (OurQuadCities.com) While insurance coverage will help make some of the necessary repairs to restore the zoo, the public can also support Niabi’s mission to assure a better tomorrow for all living things by making a donation to the Niabi Zoo Foundation, the official fundraising venue for Niabi. With a contribution to the Foundation, 100% of the funds will benefit the recovery effort and build a better Niabi for generations to come. Donations are accepted HERE.
