Crowds flock to Quad Cities farmers markets for outdoor season opening

Saturday marked the opening weekend for farmers markets in the Quad Cities. The Freight House Farmers Market kicked off its outdoor season with a packed scene in Davenport - live music, tons of vendors and great company. For new vendors, it was a busy and maybe even a little scary, experience, said Executive Director Missy Carter. "Get a couple of hour under their belt, and they are good to go," she told Our Quad Cities News. "And they're excited to come back next week. Some of them already have experienced popping up at smaller venues. "It can be a little overwhelming. But we welcome them with open arms. They have great neighbors to kind of show them the way. We're a real big close-knit community here." The market is open again Sunday until 2 p.m. The QC Farmers Market started its third season Saturday in Rock Island, with homegrown produce, handmade foods and agricultural products customers purchased directly from the people who produced them. Our Quad Cities News spoke to Suzanne Tanner, a baker who hails from Switzerland. She's excited to see the community support small businesses. "This is pretty unique," she said. Haley supporters could be in play for Biden

Nikki Haley dropped out of the Republican Presidential race on March 6. That was a day after a weak showing on Super Tuesday. But she continued to get at least 10 percent of the vote after withdrawing in the primaries for states like Georgia, Washington, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania with more primaries on the way in May.    How important are Haley voters in this election, and is there any reason to think they'll vote for Biden in substantial numbers to make a difference? Host Jim Niedelman returns with former Iowa State Rep. David Millage and Democratic political consultant Kevin Perkins to discuss that and more. "The polls have shown that Nikki Haley is still drawing somewhere close to 20 percent. Now, whether or not they turn out for Donald Trump come November ... I don't know that they have a place to go back to," Perkins said. "I'm one of those Haley supporters. I'm torn between Trump and Biden. I think they're both terrible candidates..... I guess I can't see me voting for Biden given the job that he's done and given what he's done to the Constitution," Millage said. To hear more from our panelists, click on the video. Taxes could tackle Bears fans to build new stadium

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds will likely sign legislation that would ban some anti-poverty programs. And Illinois taxpayers could be on the hook for a large part of the proposed new stadium for the Chicago Bears. Host Jim Niedelman gets into that with former Iowa State Rep. David Millage and Democratic political consultant Kevin Perkins. There are a lot of Chicago Bears fans around here. The team unveiled its plans for a new stadium that would keep it in the city. It would be right next to the existing Soldier Field. There were a lot of signs the team would build a stadium at the old Arlington Park racetrack. The team indicated it would cost about $5 billion. Now the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority told the Chicago Sun Times that Bears management underestimated the price tag. And that’s more like $6.9 billion. It goes on to say city and state taxpayers would wind up shelling out $5.9 billion of it. The Sun Times article adds that the Bears want all the revenue from any event that takes place at the stadium ... not just Bears football games. How fair is this deal to the taxpayers of Chicago and Illinois?    "If the Chicago Bears can win the Super Bowl next year, then the taxpayers can help fund that stadium .... I don't think it's a good deal for the taxpayers, the way it's structured," Perkins said. "This doesn't sound like a good deal for the taxpayers. But being a football fan, and being a sometimes-Bear fan, I kind of hope it gets built," Millage said. To hear more of what our panelists have to say, click on the video. Question of the week Now we want to hear from you, too, with our question of the week. LaHood says Pro-Palestinians crossing the line

Demonstrations on college campuses across the country about Israel’s war against Hamas continue to grow in number and in intensity. They are getting more confrontational. University of Wisconsin Police and demonstrators got physical Wednesday when officers arrested more than two dozen people for violating the law against camping on campus. Hundreds of officers in New York broke up a protest at Columbia University at the request of the administration after protestors started occupying a building on campus. There was a more violent confrontation on the campus of UCLA between Palestinian supporters and Israel supporters. Classes were canceled there Wednesday. Several members of Congress see the pro-Palestinian demonstrators as anti-Semitic,       pointing to verbal attacks directed at Jewish students on campus. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act Wednesday to beef up federal anti-discrimination laws. It now moves to the Senate. This response on Capitol Hill to those pro-Palestinian demonstrations on college campuses pits the argument of free speech against anti-discrimination law. It's one of the topics host Jim NIedelman gets into with Illinois Congressman Darin LaHood. "We've seen a disturbing trend of antisemitic activity on college campuses," LaHood said. "We should never tolerate the type of hate that we've seen toward Jewish Americans and Jewish students on campuses across the country." To hear more from LaHood, click on the video. Moline Parks & Recreation receives grant for urban forest inventory

The City of Moline is getting ready to count their trees! The city’s Parks and Recreation Department received a $6,000 matching grant to complete tree inventories and develop a management plan for its urban forest. The grant helps communities understand how to manage urban forest areas by showing the estimated number of trees, their size, condition and species. These inventories will also identify ways to increase planting and help develop a comprehensive, long-term urban forest management plan. The department used the grant to hire Great Lakes Urban Forestry Management in Batavia, Illinois to help create the management plan. The grant came from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Urban and Community Forestry Partner Grant Program and is administered by The Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI). “This is the first time the Moline Parks and Recreation has developed an urban forestry management plan, and this is going to be our work plan for the next 10 years. We are now tasked to start implementing the plan and strengthening our aging urban forest,” said Eric Griffith, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Urban trees are critical infrastructure for a community, and this funding helps to protect one of its most important resources,” said Lydia Scott, director of CRTI. “Trees clean our air and water, reduce flooding and heat, improve our mental and physical health, and provide important habitat for birds and other wildlife.” For more on the Moline Parks and Recreation Department, click here.

(davenportiaspeedway.com) Joe Beal posted an early season appearance in Competitive Concrete victory lane in the Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model feature. Beal started seventh and made his way to the front by lap six. From that point Beal had to hold off some fast company. A late race caution brought Andy Nezworski and Mitch Morris right to his rear bumper. Joe was able to hold both drivers back and take the win. Nezworski finished second with Morris third. Josh Foster and Evan Miller both put in quality runs, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Miller, Chuck Hanna, and Chris Lawrence won the late model heat races. It was a long, long time coming but Mike Garland found his way back to Davenport’s victory lane. Mike started on the pole and led 19 of the 20 laps in the Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Modified feature race. It was Garland’s first win at Davenport in 14 years. Eric Barnes gave chase to Garland but would settle for second.  Chirs Zogg was third with Ben Chapman fourth. Spencer Diercks completed the top five. Logan Veloz chalked up his second straight D&K Home Products IMCA SportMod feature win. 2nd suspect arrested after Davenport nightclub fight

A second Quad City man has been arrested after a fight broke out at a Davenport nightclub, court records show. Dzeat Beciri, 44, of Silvis, faces a felony charge of willful injury - causing serious injury, according to court records. A warrant for his arrest was served Friday, court records show. Dzeat Beciri (Scott County Jail) A fight at Daisy Dooks Shortly after 2 a.m. April 13, Davenport Police were dispatched to Daisy Dooks, 3680 W. 83rd St., for a disturbance. While officers were there, one of the victims from a fight was transported to Genesis Medical Center - East Campus for treatment, according to arrest affidavits. "The responding officers were unable to view Dooks' security footage but gathered statements from the security staff on their involvement," police allege in affidavits. The victim later was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics because of serious injuries, according to affidavits. The Criminal Investigation Division followed up on the incident. A search warrant was obtained to acquire the Daisy Dooks security footage and it was reviewed. "After reviewing the footage, it was determined that what transpired was not consistent with the initial statements provided by the staff of Daisy Dooks," officers allege in affidavits. Police allege Beciri, "without justification," assaulted a separate victim during this disturbance and "placed the victim in a headlock" while the victim was recording the incident on his cell phone. The headlock was intended to disable the victim for Daisy Dooks staff to acquire the phone, officer say in affidavits. "This act was not justified and was intended to cause serious injury to the victim. The headlock resulted in the victim's phone being taken from his person by Dooks' staff," according to police in affidavits. Beciri, who was released on bond, is set for a preliminary hearing May 10 in Scott County Court. Earlier arrest In connection with the same incident, Michael McFedries, 45, of Davenport, also faces a felony charge of willful injury – causing serious injury, according to court records. Michael McFedries (Scott County Jail) In affidavits, officers accuse McFedries of assaulting another person “by shoving them into the parking lot and then carrying out a closed-fist strike to the face/head area. The strike caused the victim to fall unconscious to the ground.” “As a result, the victim was transported to Genesis and later to the University of Iowa for the treatment of serious injuries to include a broken skull, brain bleed and fractured jaw,” affidavits show. McFedries was released on bond, and is set for a preliminary hearing May 16 in Scott County Court.

Iowa critical to migratory birds along Mississippi Flyway

World Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated May 11, and again on Oct. 12, aligning generally with migration patterns, according to a news release. The state of Iowa is within the Mississippi Flyway, the longest overland flyway in North America. The Mississippi Flyway is a critically important route for migratory birds as they migrate north in spring and south in the fall, with the wetlands and forests along the Mississippi River being important for many species of migratory songbirds in particular. Waterfowl and other wetland birds also heavily use the wetlands in the central and northern Prairie Pothole Region of Iowa, which are essential for both migratory stopover habitat as well as breeding habitat for hundreds of species of birds. Photo: WFLA As Peter Rea, supervisory park ranger with DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge explains, “Refuges and wildlife areas throughout Iowa, such as DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, provide critical habitat for migratory birds to rest, feed and recuperate on their long migration journeys. For many, these places act more like a rest stop as they continue their migration northward, while for some it's their ultimate destination for the spring and summer nesting season.” “During this time of year, it's important to minimize disturbance so other visitors can appreciate the tremendous diversity of birds that we can see throughout the state,” continued Rea. Davenport man arrested after deputies allege he did unlicensed HVAC work

A 51-year-old Davenport man faces felony charges after Scott County Deputies allege he did unlicensed HVAC work, according to court records. Jason Marchant faces a charge of ongoing criminal conduct – unlawful activity, along with first-degree fraudulent practice and three counts of second-degree fraudulent practice, court records show. Jason Marchant (Scott County Jail) The charges are in connection with incidents in 2021 at Davenport residences, according to court records. Marchant, who was arrested on a warrant, engaged in fraudulent practices “by repeatedly and continuously representing himself through advertisement and attestation as being licensed to preform heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) work in the State of Iowa” over the course of the past 11 years, deputies allege in affidavits. In affidavits, deputies allege Marchant “has repeatedly made use of a fraudulent license number throughout his career. He repeatedly and continuously presented himself as a licensed HVAC Contractor to customers, resulting in unlicensed work and numerous complaints to the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing.” During this time Marchant was investigated and found to be in violation of HVAC regulations 26 times in multiple locations in Scott County, deputies allege in affidavits. Affidavits list victims’ damages, including $10,560, $8,409, $8,775 and $6,550. Court records show that Marchant, who was released on a $25,000 cash bond, is set to appear for arraignment May 23 in Scott County Court.
